HOPKINSVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - A special night was made even more special Friday night at Christian County High School, after a senior with autism knocked down the first shot of the game at Senior Night.
CCHS senior Laderia Gold invited classmate Kristian Shouse to be a part of the festivities as an honorary starter against Hopkinsville.
Gold and Shouse had developed a bond during the school's Functional Mental Disability gym class.
Shouse, who has autism, wore jersey No. 1 on Friday night and took a handoff pass from Gold before knocking down the first shot of the game. The shot, which can be seen in the video above from Kentucky New Era reporter Chris Jung, sent the crowd into a frenzy.
Jung says that Shouse’s parents were told that she wasn’t expected to live beyond 10 days old.
"Kristian Shouse has overcome the odds and proved a lot of folks wrong," said Jung. "All because of her determination and a 24-karat heart of gold."
