LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The University of Kentucky can once again claim it has the highest average attendance in NCAA men's basketball, but there are some troubling signs according to 2018 numbers.
The university is reporting an annual average attendance of 21,875 people at Rupp Arena for the 2017-2018 season. This is down approximately seven percent from the 16-17 season where an average of 23,461 attended Wildcats games.
Kentucky has not seen this low of an attendance since 01-02, when the Tubby Smith-led Wildcats averaged 21,014.
Since the 1999-2000 season, Kentucky has led in men's basketball attendance all but three seasons. Syracuse claimed the top attendance in 04-05, 13-14 and 14-15.
