WAYNE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - The Wayne County Sheriff's Office arrested a jailer and an inmate for smuggling in contraband.
Deputy Jailer Dewey Adam Burks was arrested Monday morning at the Wayne County Detention Center. The inmate, Charles Doan, was already at the center on unrelated charges.
According to police, Burks was smuggling in pills and tobacco to inmates. Burks had both pills and tobacco on his person when he was arrested.
According to the arrest citation, Burks "took 19 hydrocodones, 5 oxycodones, a can of chewing tobacco, [and a] pouch of smoking tobacco into the detention center." The citation says the two conspired to smuggle in the items, which were intended for Doan.
Burks is charged with promoting contraband, two counts of trafficking a controlled substance, and official misconduct.
