LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Time heals wounds for many coaching rivals, and Kentucky head coach John Calipari shared kind words toward legendary Temple head coach John Chaney nearly 25 years after a heated dispute at a news conference.
Calipari, who was coaching at UMass, was confronted by Chaney in February 1994 after a 56-55 victory for the Minutemen. The New York Times reported that during Calipari's news conference, Chaney appeared in the back of the room and criticized Calipari's handling of the officials. <
It escalated to Chaney storming toward to podium before being separated.
"I'll kill you!" yelled Chaney as he was restrained.
"I know everyone still remembers when I tried to choke him — or wait, did he try to choke me? I can’t remember. LOL," Calipari tweeted in his birthday wish. "A true Hall of Fame basketball coach but even better at developing young men. I miss our battles. Happy birthday, Coach!"
Chaney, now 87, won more than 500 games as Temple head coach. He would lead the Owls to the Elite Eight five times.
