Quarterback Cameron Hergott scored on a one-yard run early in the fourth quarter to lift Beechwood past Pikeville 21-20 to win the KHSAA Class 1A state championship. It's the Tigers' 14th state title.
Hergott contributed to all three Beechwood touchdowns. He ran for 105 yards and completed 8 of 11 passes for 74 yards and two touchdowns. Beechwood's Logan Castleman also eclipsed the century mark on the ground with 101 yards rushing to go with a touchdown reception.
The Tigers took a 7-0 lead on a 24-yard Hergott to Luke Bolger pass in the second quarter. Pikeville responded on its ensuing possession with a 57-yard TD toss from Connor Roberts to Jackson Hensley, but the Panthers missed the point after attempt to make it 7-6.
Beechwood extended its lead on Hergott's 13-yard touchdown strike to Castleman to take a 14-6 lead into halftime.
The Panthers put up a pair of scores in the third quarter to take the lead. First, Roberts connected with Hensley again on a 65-yard TD. That was followed shortly by a 25-yard touchdown pass from Roberts to Christian Billiter to put Pikeville in front 20-14 with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter.
Roberts, who was named the Kentucky Football Coaches Association Class 1A player of the year, threw for 243 yards and 3 touchdowns on 10 of 15 passing with one interception. Hensley had four catches for 154 yards and two scores. Roberts also led the Panthers in rushing with 31 yards on 10 carries.
Beechwood held Pikeville to 65 rushing yards for the game.
Pikeville finishes the season at 11-3. Beechwood's final record is 12-2.
