Indictment says former UK basketball staffer stole $1.2M from pro athletes

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A federal grand jury has indicted a former staff member of the University of Kentucky Men's Basketball team for stealing more than a million dollars from professional athletes.

Leon Smith faces 14 charges including money laundering and identity theft. According to the indictment, Smith defrauded more than $1.2 million from pro athletes through his companies that provide financial services.

The indictment only lists the athletes by initials. Our news partners at the Lexington Herald-Leader reported that former player Josh Harrellson has filed a lawsuit against Smith.

Smith served as director of men's basketball at UK under Tubby Smith. He was also a former assistant athletics director at UK.
