Lincoln County's Emma King named Athlete of the Week

STANFORD, Ky. (WKYT) -- When Emma King was in fifth grade, she told her dad she wanted to play for Kentucky. Many young players have that dream, but she put in the work to make it a reality.

“It’s really humbling and I am thankful for the opportunity, and I am really excited about it," said King.

King made it official with the Wildcats in November and she has responded with a stellar senior season.

Lincoln County is off to a red-hot, 16-2 start and over the weekend, the Lady Patriots handed top-ranked Scott Co. its first loss of the season.

“It was really good," said King. "I am proud of our team and we can beat anybody on any given day. We played our hearts out and I am grateful for all of them.”

King scored a team-high 22 points and was named the Defensive Player of the Game in the win over the Cardinals, but Emma and her head coach will tell you that this team is more than just one player.

“Four of our five seniors have signed to play college basketball," said Lincoln Co. head coach Cassandra McWhorter. "Emma has that UK tag, which is spectacular but to have 4 of 5 seniors and hopefully the 5th to play college basketball is really special.”

Lincoln Co. could do something special this season and handing Scott Co. its first loss may be a sign of things to come.

“We played together and it’s something we have been working toward and we are excited to get a win because we have had two losses this year and we are just trying to prove our spot," said the UK signee.
