New Douglass High School announces basketball coaches

Kurt Young takes over the boys basketball program at Frederick Douglass High School after leading Mercer Co. to a 25-8 record and a district title this past season.

Shawn Ransom is the new Douglass girls coach. Ransom has been the Bryan Station girls' coach since 2013.

"This is a unique situation in coaching," Young said. "To start something new, start something from scratch, but still have the tradition like Frederick Douglass has, in the city of Lexington, it's just been so exciting."

"Words can't express how I feel right now," Ransom said. "Being first, you can't set the bar any higher.

The original Frederick Douglass High School closed its doors in 1971. The new Douglass is scheduled to open this fall.

Young previously coached at Hopewell High School in Virginia, where le led his team to a stat runner-up finish.

Young also was an assistant coach at Northern Kentucky and Georgetown College.

Ransom also has spent time at Bourbon Co., Lafayette and Paris.
