Painter stuns college basketball crowd with unique National Anthem performance

COLUMBIA, Mo. (WKYT) - Artist and singer Joe Everson delivered an amazing rendition of the national anthem during a Missouri Tigers-Kentucky Wildcats game in February.

The performance happened before Kentucky's road loss to Missouri Feb. 3.

Many were unsure of what the artist was depicting until he flipped the painting 180 degrees at the conclusion of the anthem.

The crowd cheered as it became clear the painting was of the raising of the American flag on Iwo Jima on Feb. 23, 1945.

One of the flag raisers was Franklin Sousley, a Fleming County, Kentucky native who died less than one month later in Iwo Jima.
