Sam Dick | A letter to Georgia Bulldog fans visiting Lexington

By  |

Dear Georgia Bulldog fan,

Welcome! We know you expected to be at the top of the SEC East. Everybody predicted it, but here we are too. UK is playing you for the right to go to the SEC Championship in Atlanta. No one outside our team predicted that. No one. And yes, we will be the underdog again.

But here’s the thing Bulldog fans. Our Wildcats love being underestimated, disrespected. It’s been that way all season, and our players thrive with a chip on their shoulder. And they don’t give up. See last 5 minutes of Missouri game for that.

So Bulldog fans welcome! We know many of you have visited Lexington in the past, but here are some new things to know about our team and home.

First, it’s now officially Kroger Field. A lot of us still use the old name, Commonwealth Stadium, so don’t get confused when you hear both. The area around the stadium, the campus, and even the city itself downtown has changed dramatically. There are giant cranes, construction sites and brand new buildings everywhere. Driving into downtown is an obstacle course of closed lanes and streets, but it’s all good. Downtown nightlife is thriving! Check out Cheapside on Friday night or the Lexington Distillery District. Why even our 8-year-old hole in the ground CentrePointe Project is now rising to the sky with a new name, City Center (new Marriott Hotel and Residence Inn, Jeff Ruby’s restaurant). The UK campus is full of new residence halls. UGA fans should tour the new UK student center. Fun, fun, fun! And over at Kroger Field, UK just finished next door a state-of-the-art baseball stadium. All this construction has made parking a challenge and added drive time, so UGA fans plan accordingly.

And oh yeah, there’s a game Saturday. When you walk in our place, you’ll find an updated facility. More food choices, and fancier message boards. Seating is a little cozier, but it’s it’s a sellout, so expect us to be really loud! By the way, if you hear an old Elton John song during the game, it’s a tribute to our fabulous running back. “Benny and the Jets” for #26, Benny Snell, Jr. And yes, we know you have some highly rated players, but so do we. #41 Josh Allen is an All-American. That #26 I mentioned earlier is rewriting our football history, and #1 Lynn Bowden reminds many fans of a guy named Randall Cobb. There are many more UK players making this a dream season. Just remember, they were told all summer and this fall by the “experts” they were second-rate and not good enough to play with the Floridas and Georgias. Yeah, we know all the guys on SportsCenter will be picking the Dawgs. That’s OK. We like that. It’s worked so far for Coach Stoops and his Cats.

Enjoy your visit Georgia fans. We’re honored to host you and your highly-ranked team. Now get ready for a hell of a game with the new Kentucky.

Sincerely,
Sam Dick
