More veteran PGA TOUR players have committed to playing in this month’s Barbasol Championship near Lexington.
Charles Howell III, Hunter Mahan, Ben Crane and Jonathan Byrd will play in the event July 19-22 at Champions at Keene Trace in Nicholasville. Rookie Beau Hossler has also committed to playing.
“The commitment by players of this caliber is a great reflection of the confidence PGA TOUR pros have in our inaugural tournament, the golf course, our organization, and frankly, the positive image of Kentucky,” said Brooks Downing, Executive Director of the event. “We sense their excitement in coming here to play, and we’re certainly excited to host and show them all our Bluegrass hospitality.”
Howell III is a two-time winner on the TOUR, capturing the 2002 Michelob Championship in Williamsburg, Va, and the 2007 Nissan Open in Los Angeles. Howell III is currently ranked 34th on the FedExCup points list with four top-10 finishes.
Mahan was a member of the United States Ryder Cup team that won the 2008 Ryder Cup at Valhalla. Mahan has six PGA TOUR victories to his credit.
Crane has five TOUR wins in his career. His first win came in 2003 at the Bellsouth Classic in Atlanta. His most recent win was in Memphis at the 2014 FedEx St. Jude Classic.
Byrd is best known for his walk-off hole-in-one, capturing the 2010 Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospital for Children Classic in Las Vegas with an ace on the fourth playoff hole.
Hossler has quickly made a name for himself as a rookie on the TOUR, with two runner-up performances this year. Hossler lost in a playoff to Ian Poulter at the Houston Open in April and tied for second most recently at the Traverlers Championship in Hartford, Conn.
