Grand re-opening celebration planned for Lyric Theatre

Several events have been planned to celebrate the re-opening of Lexington's Lyric Theatre.

The theatre, which is being renovated, is viewed by many people as a cultural icon of the African-American community.

A grand re-opening ceremony has been planned for Saturday, October 30, but events have been planned before and after that date.

"The Lyric has come to be embraced by the city-at-large, and we are excited to offer activities for all segments of the community. There will be music, movies and art," said Freda Meriwether, chair of the Lyric board, in a news release. "We will have more announcements as we get closer to October. We want people to have an opportunity to mark their calendars early."

The celebration begins Thursday, October 28 with a movie, field trip, tour, and art project for elementary schools.

On Friday, October 29, the Lyric will host "Golden Oldie Movie Day", along with tours for senior citizens. An exhibit opening and reception will also be held.

On Saturday, October 30, city officials say there will be a breakfast with First District Councilmember Andrea James, and presentations of East End initiatives at 8 a.m.

The grand re-opening ceremony for the Lyric is planned that day. A reception and tours will be held from 6:30-7:45 p.m., followed by presentations and performances at 8 p.m.

On Sunday, October 31, the public will be able to tour the facility, and attend a free inspirational concert at 4 p.m.

The city plans to announce more details about these events at the Lyric Theatre in the coming weeks.
