MAGOFFIN COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - U.S. Coal has announced it will idle most of its mining operations at its Licking River Division in Magoffin and Breathitt Counties.
The mayor of Salyersville says 100 workers in Magoffin County were laid off Friday. Fifty other miners were laid off earlier in the week.
The mayor says this was the last operating mine in Magoffin County.
In a statement, Kentucky Coal Association President Bill Bissett said, "U.S. Coal Corporation has idled the majority of mining operations at its Licking River Division in Magoffin and Breathitt Counties. This difficult decision was brought on by poor market conditions and a difficult regulatory environment. The company is presently seeking to sell its assets and is very hopeful that a new owner will be able to put a number of hard working coal miners back to work."
U.S. Coal is based in Lexington. According to Bloomberg, the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year.
