LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A dog fell from a plane and died Friday during take off at Blue Grass Airport.
Airport officials say there was a bit of confusion when this happened; they initially thought two puppies also fell out of that plane, but they were later located.
The woman who organized the trip tells WKYT the dog, Nala, and her five puppies were being taken to Canada after being rescued in Kentucky.
The fall happened around 11:45 a.m. A pilot for the organization PilotsNPaws was transporting the dogs on a private plane.
That organization connects volunteer pilots and rescue organizations to help transport animals across the country.
An airport spokesperson said just after takeoff a door beneath the plane came open and Nala fell out of the plane near the Versailles Road area.
The woman who set the trip up says they believe a handkerchief Nala was wearing may have gotten caught in the door causing it to come open. She says she and the pilot are heartbroken because of Nala's death.
All five puppies were unharmed and are now back at their foster home in Lexington.
