Driver speaks after car catches fire at gas pump

Curtis Donovan escaped the very flames that consumed his car at the Convenient Food Mart in Versailles.

His Chevy Lumina caught fire after Donovan is seen on surveillance video getting in and out of the car.

Donovan didn't walk away completely unharmed. He burned the hair off of his hand. His car is now destroyed.

"It's completely gutted," says Donovan.

Donovan says this experience has made him more aware of his surroundings, especially near a gas pump.

The fire also couldn't have come at a worse time. His car won't be covered because he just dropped his full coverage insurance. He also recently lost his job. Now with no car, he relies on his family and friends to get around.

It's a warning everyone needs to take seriously, especially after a car catches fire next to a gas pump. It was all caught on tape.

The car caught fire Sunday evening at the Convenient Food Mart on South Main in Versailles.

That's where officials say a man was pumping gas, talking on his cell phone, and got in and out of the car when it caught fire.

The fire caused more than $20,000 in damage to the gas station.

The cause of the fire is believed to be the static electricity when driver, Curtis Donovan got in and out of the car.
