STANFORD, Ky. (WKYT) - Many who live in the homes on Star Avenue in Stanford are concerned and worried, after a violent home invasion in the area.
"Yeah, we’re all scared about people breaking in on us," said a neighbor to the victim on Star Ave.
Police describe the violence that happened in the home as a home invasion. They say the 92 year old woman who lives there opened her door to a man who then beat and raped her, then made off with some of her money.
A neighbor, who didn’t want to be identified, believes the man tried her home first before attacking her neighbor.
"She was about one of the sweetest people you’d ever want to be around. I hated hearing that," said a neighbor.
The victim was taken to the hospital. Then on Saturday morning, police were again called to the area, when a stranger was found sleeping in a nearby house.
"I went in there and found his arm over his head, and him in my son's bed," said a nearby resident.
The woman says the man broke a window, climbed in, took a knife and jewelry before crashing in her son’s bed. Kevin Higgons was arrested.
Higgons is being held on burglary charges in the Lincoln County Regional Jail. Right now, police say he's only being called a person of interest in the home invasion.
Police say Higgons matches the description of a suspicious individual seen in the area. Higgons was recently released from prison and police say he has an extensive criminal history. But until a rape suspect is positively identified, people say they’ll have a hard time sleeping at night.
"I’m not going to answer the door, keep my windows locked and get me some pepper spray," said a neighbor.
Police say the 92 year old home invasion victim is being treated for what they call severe injuries at the Danville Hospital.
