CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. (WKYT) - Campbellsville police have launched an investigation after a 4-year-old child was accidentally shot in the leg on Sunday.

The Campbellsville Police Department, in a news release issued Tuesday, said officers received a call at 10:50 a.m. Sunday about someone who was injured during a shooting in the 400 block of Lowell Avenue. When officers arrived, they found a four-year-old child who had been shot in the lower right leg.

An initial investigation suggests that the gun accidentally discharged when the child's parent was repairing the firearm, police said.

Personnel from the Campbellsville - Taylor County Emergency Medical Service (CTCEMS) arrived and began treatment before transporting the child to the Taylor Regional Hospital. The child was treated at Taylor Regional Hospital and later transferred to Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville.

The incident remains under investigation by the Campbellsville Police Department.
