BOURBON COUNTY (WKYT) - Four people died Friday afternoon after a two-vehicle crash on Cane Ridge Road in Bourbon County.
Bourbon County Coroner Dee Gee Roe identified the victims as Julio Barrios, 38, of Galax, Va.; Javier Henriquez, 22, of Galax, Va.; Margaret Franklin, 70, of Bourbon County; and James Henry Stevens, 75, of Bourbon County.
Roe said Barrios, Henriquez and Franklin died at the scene. Stevens was pronounced dead at Bourbon Community Hospital, Roe said.
Bourbon County Sheriff Mark Matthews said two other people were taken to the hospital. Their conditions were not immediately available.
Authorities said multiple people were ejected from the vehicles, and it did not appear as though they were wearing seat belts.
Sheriff Matthews says the accident happened on a dangerous stretch of road.
"This curve is horrendous for crashes, as you can see," he said. "Some of the trees in the background were caused not from this wreck. Behind you here there's wrecks in the culvert. This is a bad curve here."
The accident happened about 12:50 p.m. when four people - including Barrios and Henriquez - in a Hyundai passenger car were on their way back to work at a nearby farm, the sheriff said.
Investigators believe the car crossed the center line, hitting Franklin and Stevens, who were in the van.
Sheriff Matthews said he did not believe the cars were not going any faster than the posted speed limit of 55 m.p.h.
Law enforcement closed Cane Ridge Road from Glenn Road to Steele Road for several hours. The roads reopened after 4 p.m.
It is not clear what caused the car to cross center line. Investigators were interviewing witnesses, but Matthews said he did not think drugs or alcohol were a factor.
