LEE COUNTY, Va. (WKYT) - A former Central Kentucky assistant principal accused of sexually abusing a student has been found dead.

According to Berea police Joy Hayes died in Lee County, Virginia, over the weekend. Investigators say they are now trying to figure out how she died.

Hayes was indicted by a Madison County grand jury back in December for nine charges, including sexual abuse, assault and stalking.

Police say Hayes met the victim while she was an assistant principal at Madison Southern High School. In addition to sexually abusing the victim, she's accused of stalking and assaulting the victim's friend.

Hayes resigned from Madison Southern in December of 2013.

Berea police also tell WKYT that Hayes had recently been in contact with the victim and they were preparing to file new charges against her.
