Man arrested after falling through ceiling of Lexington business

LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - It was the kind of work day few will ever forget at Roses.

"Yeah, it's crazy! Everybody, customers and employees, was freaking out," described Shala Covington, an assistant manager at the store.

Covington said she had just walked into the back office when she noticed something strange over her head.

"I noticed somebody was lifting some tiles up."

A quick call to the police, a 30 minute investigation, and a thermal imaging camera discovered the store had a man hiding in the attic.

"This is very uncommon for something like this to occur at one o'clock in the afternoon. This is primarily the type of crime we would see usually in the early morning hours," stated Lt. Sam Murdock of the Lexington Police.

"I'm thinking that dude was either trying to rob us or do something crazy," said Covington.

When police tried to get the man down he ran... kind of.

"We just heard a rumbling like up in the ceiling or whatever," described one shopper, who did not want to be identified, "Then all of a sudden the police just started screaming for everybody to get out of the store!"

Police say the man then fell several feet through the ceiling and into the store. He was injured, but still tried to get away forcing officers to use their tasers. One officer was injured, but police say it was minor.

"Everybody had this look on their faces like 'Oh my Gosh!'" said Covington after witnessing the man come crashing through the ceiling.

Police say their suspect is 47-year-old Paul Masters. He was taken to the hospital after busting up his face, but now he's in jail on burglary and fleeing and evading charges. They believe he got into the attic space after climbing through an access point in the bathroom.

"It's the stuff you see in the movies not something you see in real life," scoffed the shopper.

"I feel like I've got to watch everything and every little noise is going to make me nervous," added Covington.

While police have their man, they still don't have an answer for why he was up there.
