FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - For 56 years, Kentucky has hosted an annual prayer breakfast to cover the commonwealth in thoughts and prayers for the coming year.

“I know we need to lean on prayer and our values if we want to create a state where everyone is welcome,” said Governor Andy Beshear.

Addressing the state were familiar faces, not just representing the Christian faith, but Jewish and Muslim houses of worship too.

“Let us remember that our strength lies in our unity and our ability to work together toward common goals. Let us embrace our differences as sources of strength,” shared Dr. Muhammad Babar, Muslim Americans for Compassion.

Beshear recapped the past four years, crediting faith for helping Kentucky overcome obstacles.

“While these trials are often beyond our understanding, I believe we always see God in the response,” said Beshear.

In true Kentucky fashion, Kentucky Basketball made its way into the conversation. Former UK Basketball player Dominique Hawkins shared how faith has shaped his life.

“The state of Kentucky, we just need to come together, smile at each other, show love,” said Hawkins.

Bringing the breakfast to a close, leaders prayed over the legislative, executive, and judicial branches as they move forward this year, aligning with the theme that encapsulates it all: Forward Together in Faith, Empathy, and Compassion.

“We should not spend our time arguing about what divides us. Yes, we have challenges and we always will, but thank goodness for prayer in those tough times,” shared Gov Beshear.
