2 adults, dog rescued after car washes down creek in Frankfort
FRANKFORT, Ky. (WKYT) - Two adults and a dog were rescued after a car was swept down a creek in Frankfort Monday afternoon.
On Monday, a vehicle got stuck trying to pass Snowhill Road which was entirely taken over by Benson Creek.
Emergency responders received a call about a truck with two adults and a dog trapped in the creek around 3:30 p.m. Monday.
“An hour before, we had people able to drive through it with no issue, and then just a little bit later, we had 3 to 5 feet of water,” said Frankfort-Franklin County Director of Emergency Management Ray Kinney.
One person was located downstream, while the second person and the dog were rescued from the truck using ropes and a ladder.
Emergency Management officials are warning folks to take extra precautions to stay safe when there is high water on roadways as we have more rain on the way.
The water is still rushing over the roadway, and with more flooding concerns associated with the incoming storms, emergency management wants folks to stay as safe as possible when driving roads near creeks and streams
“You need to slow down, you need to watch for debris, you need to watch for water at night especially; you can’t see if there is a roadway under the water,” said Kinney.
Sometimes, lines on roadways can blur or disappear during periods of heavy rain due to the reflective material scattering the light off the water droplets.
“Turn around,” said Kinney. “You know we press and press and press that. You may have to go a little out of your way, but just turn around and go a different direction or wait for the road to be clear.”
And while rescue crews were able to recover everyone safely from the vehicle, folks are reminded that it only takes a moment for things to take a dangerous turn.
