Ky. family faces child’s second cancer diagnosis
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - A Powell Co. family is spending much of the holiday season at UK Hospital.
Just days after celebrating the birth of their youngest child, the family discovered that their oldest child’s cancer had returned.
Seven-year-old Greyson loves Minecraft, Pokémon, playing outside and spending time with his younger sister. He is also an incredibly strong kid.
“It’s just something that you never think is going to happen to your family,” said Gabrielle Wireman, Greyson’s mom. “You see it happen to other people, but it never hits that close to home.”
Wireman said this past Feb., Greyson was diagnosed with Leukemia. In June, Greyson beat the disease.
“There’s a saying that whenever children fight, they don’t fight alone and that has been the case in both of his diagnoses,” said Wireman.
However, just days after Greyson’s youngest sister was born, abnormal labs led to a second diagnosis.
“In my heart, I kind of knew that it had come back,” she said.
This time, Wireman said Greyson will need a bone marrow transplant, which would be done in Cincinnati, and would bring the family to stay in the area for a few months. Wireman said she is trying to juggle moving the family to Cincinnati for the procedure while also being able to keep the family home in Powell County.
“You work your butts off to buy a home for your family and to make it a home,” she said. “I want him to come home after everything he’s been through to lay in his bed, in his room, and to play with his friends next door.”
Wireman said Greyson has been asking tough questions about his diagnosis and his health, scenarios that no seven-year-old should be thinking about. However, she said faith has been a constant through both cancer battles.
“He knows that there is God and that God loves him, and he trusts that God will heal him,” said Wireman. “Greyson did want me to say to everyone that Jesus loves you, and Merry Christmas.”
Wireman has set up a GoFundMe in an attempt to keep the family together in Cincinnati over the coming months and covering the mortgage of the family home in their absence.
