LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - For today’s Good Question, Larry asks: Will you need a REAL ID to fly on a private flight?

If it is a flight you are paying for, yes, you will.

Even if it is through a smaller charter flight, those operators say they follow the same rules as larger commercial airlines when it comes to ID requirements.

The people with Monarch Air Group, which is based in Florida but has flights out of Lexington, told me every private domestic charter is subject to TSA screening. And names are checked against the No-Fly List.

“Federal regulations require the positive identification of each passenger (over the age of 18 years). At the time of boarding, even on private flights, each passenger will be required to present a government-issued photo ID for positive identification or REAL ID following May 7th, 2025,” David Gitman, CEO of Monarch Air Group.

So a REAL ID, passport, military ID, or other acceptable form will work.

They tell me that for private flights, most passengers are pre-screened ahead of the flight, so they don’t think this will impact them as much as the larger commercial flights.

“The only upcoming change is that the ID has to be a REAL ID as of May 7th. We do not foresee any issues in the private aviation industry associated with the implementation of this new policy.”
