Lexington to test network of outdoor warning sirens
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Lexington Emergency Management will test its network of outdoor warning sirens at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
The outdoor warning siren system is meant to alert people who are outdoors that there is a hazardous weather watch or warning, chemical spill or Chemical Stockpile Emergency Preparedness Program incident.
There are 34 outdoor warning sirens located in parks throughout Fayette County and in the downtown area, according to Lexington Emergency Management. In August, a new warning siren was installed in Martin Luther King Park.
The sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of each month, and people can expect to hear a series of chimes followed by a voice announcement saying, “This is a test.”
Lexington Emergency Management is reminding people to not call 911 about the siren test, and that the siren system is intended to warn people who are outdoors — not people inside homes, apartments or office buildings.
