Saturday police arrested a juvenile and charged him with murder. They say he picked up a gun and shot 17-year-old David Fletcher Jones in the head in the basement of a home.

Police say the shooting happened just before 5:30 p.m. Friday on Honey Jay Court, off Centre Parkway.

Police confirmed that the 17-year-old teenager was taken to UK Hospital where he died.

Even though upfront police did not know if the shooting was accidental or intentional, police said they treated it as if it were a crime scene.

"We have detectives coming out investigating, we have our officers investigating, we're doing a neighborhood canvass of anyone who might have been outside and seen people fleeing from the scene," Lt. Jackie Newman said. "So at this point we're really asking for information and for help because we want to be able to determine what happened and we have very limited information at this time."

Police say the gun used in the shooting has not yet been found.

According to Fayette County school leaders, nearby Tates Creek High School went on heightened alert, because two school events were going on at the time. Heightened alert meant the doors were secured, according to school leaders. However, the heightened alert has since been lifted.

WKYT talked to neighbors Saturday who say they've almost become numb to the violence.

"This street is about as bad as you can get just about any where in town," a woman, who asked we not identify her, said. "We see people selling drugs right out here in front of the house. It's blatant; It's not hidden at all. People stand out here in the yard with their guns in their hands."
