The courtroom can be an intimidating place. Comfort can only come when you know that you’re in capable hands of the lawyers in the case, and that of the judge presiding over everything.
And that comfort can only come when you know that the judge is unbiased, patient and listens without prejudice. And that comes exclusively from a judge who has the experience of more than 10 years of public service.
That judge is Tyler Frazier. And he’s ready to continue serving his hometown in Madison and Clark Counties.
A ninth generation Madison Countian, Frazier has roots in Clark County. He has experienced the Kentucky justice system from all sides. He was the assistant commonwealth attorney under David Smith, was a defense attorney in private practice and was the city attorney for Richmond before being appointed to the bench by Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear.
Frazier’s varied legal experience has shaped his approach to public service. Rather than seeking the spotlight, he sees district court as an opportunity to make a direct difference in the lives of Madison and Clark County residents. The court handles many of the legal matters that affect people in their everyday lives, making the judge’s role an important one in the community.
A district judge serves as both the finder of fact and law in bench trials while handling local legal matters. The judge can spend his/her day managing cases involving citizens of Madison and Clark Counties from juveniles to elders, criminal and traffic violations, civil cases and small claims, probates and wills, arraignments and preliminary hearings and domestic violence and mental health commitments. It is a position that requires knowledge, flexibility, patience and an open mind to see all sides.
Frazier fully understands that he needs to check all his biases at the door and be prepared to investigate and check all the facts that are presented to him to make the most informed decision in the best interest of his fellow citizens. It’s what he’s done for the past year, and what he hopes to continue doing as he works to not only protect the laws he has been sworn to uphold, but also defend the rights of the men and women who look for justice.
Unafraid to stand up for those who can’t speak up for themselves, including domestic violence victims, juveniles and others, Frazier shares that, “I have compassion for everyone involved, including the defendants, but I do have a passion for justice and for following the law.”
A strong will to do what’s right was just something he grew up with. Frazier’s commitment to public service is rooted in his family’s longstanding ties to Madison County. His mother’s family has a tradition of teaching in the community, and his mother retired as the district’s assistant superintendent and chief financial officer. Frazier has the support of not only the men and women he works with inside the courthouse, but looks to have the support from his fellow citizens.
“There’s a lot of merit to the people having someone that they select...someone they trust, and I believe it’s important that the citizens trust the judge,” he told Win City Voices earlier this month. “While elections might be the best system for vetting a judge, there should also be something to be said for having the respect of other lawyers and being appointed.”
