Grilling season is in full swing – and it’s the perfect time to enjoy flavorful meals that are just as nutritious as they are delicious. Whether you’re cooking for a crowd or prepping dinner on a busy weeknight, these simple tips can help you make the most of your time at the grill.

  1. Choose lean cuts. Start with lean beef options like sirloin, flank steak, or 93% lean ground beef. These cuts are naturally lower in saturated fat while still delivering the high-quality protein, iron, zinc, and B vitamins that beef is known for.
  2. Go low-sodium with marinades and rubs. Many store-bought marinades and seasoning blends are packed with sodium. Look for low-sodium options, or better yet, make your own using olive oil, citrus juice, vinegar, herbs, and spices. This helps boost flavor while supporting heart health — no excess salt needed.
  3. Pay attention to temperature. Preheat your grill to medium-high before adding beef. This helps ensure even cooking and creates that satisfying sear. Be sure to cook beef (steaks or roasts) to an internal temperature of at least 145°F and ground beef (burgers) to 160°F.
  4. Let it rest. Once the beef comes off the grill, give it a few minutes to rest before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute, keeping every bite tender and flavorful.
  5. Build a balanced plate. Pair your grilled beef with a variety of healthful foods including colorful fruits and vegetables and a serving of whole grains like quinoa, brown rice, or whole wheat buns. Grilled peppers, zucchini, tomatoes, and corn all make great seasonal sides that boost fiber and flavor.

Grilling can be more than just a summertime tradition – it’s also a great way to enjoy balanced, nutrient-rich meals that fuel an active lifestyle. So fire up the grill, get creative with your sides, and enjoy beef as part of a healthy summer plate!
