Kentucky residents without health insurance now have a new way to get screened for colon cancer at no cost. Through the Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Program, eligible adults can receive a free at-home Cologuard® test and, if needed, a follow-up colonoscopy.
Kentucky CancerLink, a Lexington-based nonprofit partner of the Kentucky Colon Cancer Screening and Prevention Program, is helping connect people to this opportunity. The organization works statewide to reduce barriers to screening, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer, with a special focus on screening those who are uninsured and face financial challenges.
The Cologuard test is available to Kentucky residents ages 45 to 75 who are uninsured, have no symptoms of colon cancer, no significant family history of the disease, and no history of precancerous polyps. The test is done at home and mailed to a lab, making it easier for people who have difficulty taking time off work or traveling to appointments.
If you qualify for a no-cost screening and a Cologuard result comes back positive, the program also covers a follow-up colonoscopy. This can be a critical next step in removing polyps for further prevention or catching cancer early, when it may be easier to treat.
Program leaders stress that cost, transportation, or fear should not stand in the way of getting screened. Kentuckians who qualify are encouraged to take advantage of this resource and learn more about their options.
