From March 2020 to October 2022, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment rose by more than 20% in Kentucky, and the median rent in Lexington surpassed $900. For many families, finding and obtaining affordable housing is key to ending their cycle of poverty and homelessness.

The Lexington Rescue Mission is actively involved in helping families find the housing they desperately need. Brody and his brothers were one of those families.

“My younger brothers and I were homeless. They are college students and needed a place to study. I would pick up extra shifts at work so I could afford a hotel room to give them a place to study. We went from hotel to hotel. The Lexington Rescue Mission worked with me to find affordable housing, covered some of my expenses and even provided beds and a table and chairs for our new home,” said Brody. “I would send other people to their program because it’s lifechanging.”

“Our case workers typically have more than 20 people looking for housing on their caseload at any given time,” said Laura Carr, executive director. “We help people with 50% of the move in costs which used to average about $500 for each family helped. Today, it is $1,000 or more.

The Lexington Rescue Mission is asking the community to rally around those seeking affordable housing by participating in Walk for Warmth. This two-mile walk will raise awareness for the need for more affordable housing, and all the funds raised will be used to house those who come to the Lexington Rescue Mission for help.

Walk for Warmth is on Saturday, February 17th, 10 a.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in downtown Lexington. You can register and donate at www.walkforwarmth.org. Together, we can take powerful steps to end homelessness in Lexington, one individual and family at a time.
