Kids ate Halloween candy at school not knowing it was laced with THC, officials say
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (KBTX/Gray News) - Three students in Texas ate candy they thought was for Halloween, but the sweet treats ended up being laced with THC.
The reported incident happened Thursday at a charter school in the College Station area.
According to International Leadership of Texas Charter Schools, one of the students thought the candy tasted unusual and spit it out. However, the other two ingested the candy, with one of them going to the nurse’s office.
The nurse reportedly realized the candy was laced with THC and notified school officials and authorities.
College Station police said officers determined it was an accident that the children consumed the candy. The student who brought the candy in, and their family, were unaware it was not just candy.
School officials said the student’s parents were giving rides to high schoolers the night before to a Halloween event and the candy in question was unknowingly left behind in their vehicle.
On Thursday, the student grabbed it, thinking it was standard candy, and notified staff as soon as they felt something wasn’t right, according to the school.
“The candy in this incident was unopened and looked very similar to a bag of Sour Patch Kids, and it was only upon closer inspection that we realized it contained THC,” school officials said.
Authorities said no one is facing criminal charges for what happened.
However, the school system is using this as an opportunity to encourage parents to check their children’s candy over the Halloween holiday.
