WINCHESTER, Ky. (WKYT) - A 92-year-old Korean War veteran in Winchester was given a warm surprise on Friday.

William Keller was living in discomfort because his HVAC unit had bit the dust. Comfort Heating & Air heard about his plight and did not leave this army soldier out in the cold.

Keller’s daughter told WKYT he has arthritis and the cold really bothers his affliction.

This gift is a godsend for this Winchester pastor of nearly 40 years.

When Comfort Heating & Air did an inspection, they found something concerning. They say the installation of the previous HVAC system led to harmful problems.

“We actually had to turn off his gas so that there weren’t poisonous fumes that could do harm to him actually,” Comfort Heating & Air General Manager Ty Myers said.

Keller’s son-in-law, Bobby Abney, nominated him for the new unit. He says he noticed his father-in-law’s health was in decline.

“The fumes were not going out of the vent like it should, and they were coming into his house, so I can say comfort heating and air actually saved this man’s life.”

Keller is thankful for the heat and to simply breathe fresh air again.

“I thank god they found that and got rid of it,” Keller said.

The new HVAC unit was valued at $12,000.
