3 puppies found in Lexington test positive for parvo
Animal care agency offering free vaccines to stop spread
LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Three puppies found in Lexington have tested positive for Canine Parvovirus, according to Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control.
The puppies were reportedly found as strays on Augusta Drive Tuesday and were showing signs of illness at intake. All three tested positive for parvo and are now isolated and receiving veterinary treatment, the agency said.

About the virus
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, Canine Parvovirus is a highly contagious virus that spreads through direct contact with infected feces, contaminated soil and surfaces including bowls, leashes, kennels, shoes, and hands. The virus can survive in the environment for months.
Transmission hotspots include dog parks, boarding facilities, groomers, apartment complexes, and public walking areas.
Symptoms and prevention
Symptoms of parvo include severe vomiting, foul-smelling or bloody diarrhea, lethargy, fever, and rapid dehydration.
Puppies under 5 months are especially vulnerable. A three- to four-shot vaccine series is typically recommended, followed by a booster at 1 year of age and then every three years. Prevention measures include immediate isolation of sick dogs and disinfecting contaminated areas with bleach solutions.
Free vaccines available
Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control is currently offering free vaccines to help stop the spread in the community.
