KENTUCKY (WKYT) - Kentucky State University President Koffi Akakpo is responding after the National Alumni Association voted no confidence in his leadership.

Akakpo told the Lexington Herald-Leader he understands that people are concerned about the university, but said its financial issues predate him.

Akakpo defended the impacts of Senate Bill 185, legislation that would change the state’s only public historically Black university into a polytechnic school.

He said he is willing to collaborate with alumni and critics to make the school successful.

Akakpo has served as KSU’s president for three years. Despite the no-confidence vote, the university’s Board of Regents renewed his contract Friday for an additional three years.
