LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - The Lexington Fire Department held a pinning ceremony Tuesday morning for its new junior fire chief.

The program is in partnership with Fayette County Public Schools.

Fifth graders at Squires Elementary wrote an essay and created a poster focused on safely charging lithium-ion batteries. A student named Harper won and was named junior fire chief.

Chief Jason Wells said the program is important for informing the next generation.

During Fire Prevention Week, Harper will have the opportunity to work alongside the fire department and be fitted for an actual fire suit.
