Jessamine County first responders mark anniversary of colleague killed on duty
JESSAMINE COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - November is a hard month for first responders in Jessamine County: It is a time when they remember losing one of their own.
Friday marks the 11th anniversary of the day John Mackey was hit by a car while on duty. Mackey died from his injuries days later on Nov. 9.
Jessamine County E911 commemorated Mackey with a post on social media, saying he “had a big smile and an even bigger heart” and that its thoughts are with his family and crewmates.
Since his death, Mackey’s family helped pass the John Mackey Memorial Act, which extends line of duty benefits to emergency services workers.
He has also become the face of a movement to establish a memorial for fallen Kentucky EMS workers.
