BOURBON COUNTY, Ky. (WKYT) - Kentucky State Police say a woman is dead and a man is in the hospital after responding to a welfare check in Bourbon County.
Around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, authorities responded to the scene at a home on Mount Carmel Road, just off U.S. Highway 27 near the Bourbon-Harrison County line.
Both the sheriff's office and state police responded along with the coroner's office.
State police say when they arrived, they saw a man and woman inside on the floor.
The coroner pronounced the woman dead at the scene, while the man was taken by ambulance to the hospital. State police identified the woman as Crystal Kelley, 46, of Paris. Troopers identified the man as Michael Kelley, 50, of Paris.
Police recovered a handgun at the scene, and are gathering evidence to determine what happened.
"They're just going to take it step by step and try to replay everything that occurred to make sure we get it right," KSP Trooper Charles Loudermilk said.
Neighbors say they can't believe their quiet community is now part of a crime scene.
"Everybody in this community knows everybody. it's pretty tight around here. For this to happen, it's really bad," Paul Wells, who lives across the street from the home, said.
Neighbors say there was some trouble between the man who lives in the home and his estranged wife, but they never could have imagined deadly violence in their neighborhood.
"It's very shocking to come in and see all this and not know what's going on," Wells said.
The woman's body is being sent to Frankfort for an autopsy.
Michael Kelley is charged with Murder-Domestic Violence in connection to the case. Police have not released his condition.
